Alliance Engineering Supplies (South Wales) Limited was founded in 1968 by Wilf Broomfield, from Barry. Wilf had considerable practical experience with gland packings, gaskets and many more.
Asbestos related products gleaned through his time as a marine engineer in the merchant navy and in technical sales with the Beldam Asbestos Company of that era. Wilf ran the Alliance Company, initially with the help of his daughter, Jacqui, from the Ace Industrial Estate (now long gone) in Ferry Road, Cardiff until his retirement in 1989.
The company had become recognised and trusted as a specialist hand cut, bespoke gasket supply service to the chemical, power, mining, shipping, and engineering industries throughout the South Wales corridor.
The addition of industrial textiles, gland packings, compensators, flexible and fabricated connections together with boiler spares, significantly broadened the product range during the early years as the company established itself in the industrial markets and gained a reputation for excellent service and consistent quality.
The company expertly and sympathetically organised a successful conversion to non-asbestos products for its customers in the mid to late nineties, following the UK and eventual European ban on the use of asbestos materials.
Alliance was sold to the Avon Group Manufacturing Company in 1988 and operated under the directorship of Ken Robbins, who had managed the Southern region of Scandura Limited in manufacturing and sales of industrial textiles and sealing products for the preceding 8 years. The combination of some innovative thinking coupled with traditional virtues of integrity and personal service, enabled the company to expand within the group and become a prominent and effective manufacturing and supply source for its’ clientele.
New premises were acquired in East Moors Road, Cardiff in 1990 with the assistance of the Cardiff and Vale Enterprise and a machine cutting facility was installed to further enhance the company’s capabilities.
BS5750 Part 2 Quality accreditation was achieved with BSI in September 1993 and a further important development in January 1995 was the purchase of the Heatshield Engineering Company, who were well established in Abercarn. Heatshield manufactured a wide range of products from ceramic, plastic, PVC, cork, synthetic rubber and paper materials.
