Non Asbestos Fibre Gaskets

Until the 1970s asbestos was the magic material of the time. There were no non‐asbestos products; the phrase was unknown at the time. Asbestos had very useful properties and advantages. It was chemically inert, was heat resistant, pH resistant, water proof, strong yet flexible, odourless, resilient and exceptionally abrasion resistant. These properties made asbestos one of the most widely used industrial materials.

By the 1980s however, the image of asbestos changed from a useful magic material, to a hazardous life‐threatening substance. It was claimed to be associated with cancer after its fibres were found in organs of diagnosed patients. The resulting legal battle was brutal and completely killed off the asbestos industry. A substitute was needed quick and non-asbestos materials were create.
